Future of Us Festival
San Francisco
A seven-circuit botanical labyrinth created for a civic futures festival exploring participation and agency. Participants moved through a sequence of prompts, identified one small step they were willing to begin, and added flowers and commitments to the installation. Over the course of the gathering, the labyrinth became a collective creation.
Reflection requires different conditions.
Conferences and gatherings are designed to bring people together around important ideas. But insight does not automatically become understanding, and understanding does not automatically become action.
A labyrinth creates a different kind of space within the event.
Participants step out of the flow of programming and into a physical experience that allows them to slow down, reflect, and engage a central question in their own way.
Depending on the setting, the labyrinth may function as:
a quiet space for individual reflection
a facilitated experience connected to an event theme
a participatory installation that changes as people contribute to it
a place to move from reflection toward commitment or action
The labyrinth offers structure without prescribing an answer.
